Police have launched an urgent appeal for information after a woman was grabbed and threatened in what is being treated as an attempted kidnapping in Wigan town centre.

Early Morning Ordeal on Central Park Way

The terrifying incident occurred on Friday 9 January 2026, between 6.05am and 6.20am. The victim was walking along Central Park Way when she was approached by a man.

The suspect grabbed her and issued threats, attempting to force her to go with him. Showing immense courage, the terrified woman managed to break free from his grip and flee to a place of safety. The attacker then left the area.

Police Description of the Suspect

Greater Manchester Police have released a detailed description of the man they wish to trace in connection with the Wigan kidnapping attempt. He is described as a white male, approximately 6ft 1in tall.

At the time of the incident, he was wearing:

  • Grey joggers
  • Black trainers
  • A yellow hi-vis vest
  • A black beanie hat

Appeal for Witnesses and Reassurance to Public

Detective Sergeant Andrew Partington, of GMP's Wigan CID, is leading the investigation. He stated: "Whilst we understand incidents of this nature are concerning, I want to reassure our communities that we take reports of this nature very seriously and the safety of the public is our top priority."

He confirmed that officers are supporting the victim and pursuing multiple lines of enquiry. Extra patrols have been deployed in the area to provide reassurance.

Police are urging anyone with information to come forward. This includes anyone who may have witnessed the incident, has relevant CCTV or dashcam footage, or believes they can help identify the man involved.
