The hosts trailed at half-time after John McGinn’s early goal, but a second-half resurgence, sparked by substitute Christian Eriksen, turned the match on its head.
Villa took the lead in the ninth minute when McGinn latched onto a long pass from Tyrone Mings, outpaced Danny Rose, and slotted past Hugo Lloris. Dean Smith’s side dominated the first half, outthinking and matching Spurs physically. However, the introduction of Eriksen just past the hour mark shifted momentum.
Tanguy Ndombele equalised with a fine debut goal before Kane struck twice in the final five minutes to secure the win. Mauricio Pochettino praised Kane’s sharpness after a summer break, saying, “I think he spent a nice holiday, you saw it on Instagram.” The manager, however, downplayed Eriksen’s impact, insisting the team improved collectively in the second half.
The victory was built on a strong second-half performance, with Spurs dominating possession and creating chances. Villa, meanwhile, faded badly, unable to hold the ball and conceding possession cheaply. Smith acknowledged his side’s fatigue, stating, “If you keep giving the ball away and keep having to chase it... their physicality showed through at the end.”
Pochettino’s squad depth was evident, with new signings Ndombele, Giovanni Lo Celso, and Ryan Sessegnon providing options. However, Eriksen’s future remains uncertain, with the Dane expressing a desire to leave. Jan Vertonghen, also in the final year of his contract, was left out of the squad entirely, raising further questions about Spurs’ long-term planning.
