CBeebies presenter Nigel Clarke has publicly disclosed that his 16-year-old daughter, Sienna, was violently assaulted during an attempted phone robbery on the London Underground, resulting in a significant black eye. The television personality, renowned for his roles on CBBC, Disney Channel, and Nickelodeon, described how attackers targeted his daughter in a bid to steal her mobile device, but she courageously resisted.
Violent Confrontation on Public Transport
According to Mr Clarke, the incident occurred this week when assailants tried to snatch Sienna's phone. Despite the aggressive approach, the schoolgirl 'stood her ground' and fought back by lashing out and kicking the perpetrators. However, during the struggle, she was struck in the face, leading to a visible bruise. Mr Clarke, who also has an 18-year-old son named Rory, shared a video of Sienna's injury on social media to highlight the severity of the attack.
Rising Crime Rates on the Tube
In his social media post, Mr Clarke emphasised that phone snatching is 'rife' on the London Underground, noting he witnessed a similar incident just four weeks prior. This warning comes amid alarming statistics: thefts on the Tube have surged by 380 percent between 2021 and 2024, as reported by MoneySuperMarket Home Insurance. Additionally, British Transport Police data shows 8,414 mobile phones were stolen in 2024 alone, marking a 22 percent increase from the previous year.
Parental Guidance and Public Awareness
Mr Clarke, who resides in London with his wife, Professor Ruprika Deloga, expressed mixed emotions about his daughter's response. He admitted having conversations with Sienna 'about not retaliating' but also 'praised her for being brave and holding her ground'. He acknowledged that as parents, there is 'a lot to unpick here' regarding safety and self-defence.
Practical Safety Advice for Commuters
To combat this growing issue, the TV host urged commuters to enhance their vigilance, particularly as Tube doors close. He explained that thieves often strike just before the doors shut, using the beeping sound as a cue to snatch phones and escape quickly. Mr Clarke offered simple preventative measures: avoid standing near doors with phones out, refrain from using devices while the train is stationary with open doors, and only check phones between stations when doors are closed.
He encouraged widespread sharing of these tips among teens and adults, stating, 'Being smart can genuinely bring the numbers down. Let's look out for each other.'
