Secondary school teacher Annika Kiran Kapur has been indefinitely banned from the profession after drinking gin in her classroom. Ms Kapur was suspended and subsequently sacked from Djanogly City Academy in Nottingham in early 2025 for consuming alcohol while teaching.

Witnesses reported that Ms Kapur slurred her words, acted in an exaggerated manner, and appeared unsteady before throwing up in a staff toilet. She admitted to making a “grievous error” but claimed she unknowingly drank from a water bottle containing gin from a “birthday weekend” and “chugged it to stop myself vomiting” when she realised.

Ms Kapur is now prohibited from teaching indefinitely, with the possibility to apply for her prohibition order to be set aside in April 2028. The incident has drawn significant attention to professional conduct standards in education.
