Secret Service Trainee Faces Felony Charges in Hidden Camera Surveillance Case
A trainee with the United States Secret Service has been arrested and charged with felony eavesdropping after allegedly conducting a weeks-long surveillance operation against his own roommate using a hidden camera cleverly disguised as an ordinary phone charger. The disturbing Big Brother-style scheme unfolded at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) in Glynn County, Georgia, where both individuals were undergoing training.
The Arrest and Initial Discovery
Joel Canvasser, 41, was taken into custody on April 8 after his roommate reported suspicious behavior to authorities. According to an incident report obtained by the Daily Mail, investigators were presented with substantial evidence including photographs, text messages from multiple unknown numbers, an SD card, and the charger device itself, which police confirmed had been used to secretly record the victim's movements.
Canvasser, who appeared with a blank expression in his mugshot, had recently joined the Secret Service and was undergoing training at the time of the alleged incident. The victim told officers the ordeal began approximately one month earlier in March when his personal phone charger mysteriously disappeared from their shared living space.
The Elaborate Surveillance Scheme
Following the disappearance of the original charger, Canvasser suggested to his suitemate that cleaning staff might have taken the device before offering him a replacement charger. The victim then plugged Canvasser's charger into a wall outlet beneath their television, unaware that the device provided "coverage of the entire room" according to police documentation.
Within days of installing the replacement charger, the victim began receiving strange messages from unknown telephone numbers. The police report detailed that "over time he began to realize whoever was texting him was simultaneously watching him." Initially assuming his phone had been compromised, the victim placed a bandage over his phone's camera as a precautionary measure.
Escalating Suspicion and Discovery
At first dismissing the messages as spam, the victim even approached Canvasser for assistance because of his supposed "cyber background." Canvasser allegedly told his roommate the phone contained malware and proceeded to reset the device. However, the victim noted that after returning the phone, it automatically connected to Canvasser's personal WiFi network named "Batcave mobile."
Although the messages temporarily ceased following the phone reset, they resumed with disturbing specificity approximately one week later. Police records describe one particularly alarming instance: "There was a specific instance where the victim was using the bathroom and his phone was in his pocket. When he finished, he checked his phone and saw a message referencing him using the bathroom."
This explicit reference prompted the victim to realize the surveillance was occurring through another device rather than his phone camera. He subsequently searched his room and discovered the charger contained a hidden lens when light reflected off the device. The victim also informed investigators that Canvasser had entered his room multiple times while he was asleep, leading him to begin securing his belongings with locks.
Official Response and Background
Officials at FLETC reported the incident to local police after Canvasser's suitemate expressed his desire to press formal charges. Secret Service Deputy Director Matthew Quinn described the allegations as "deeply troubling" and confirmed that Canvasser's security clearance has been suspended along with his access to agency systems.
"The charges are deeply troubling and raise significant concerns about the individual's character and fitness to serve," Quinn stated. "As this matter is now before the courts, we will allow the facts to be presented through the judicial process." The deputy director commended the swift actions taken by trainers at the federal facility upon discovering the alleged misconduct.
Personal Life and Professional History
Images obtained by the Daily Mail reveal a contrasting portrait of Canvasser before his arrest, showing him smiling alongside his husband, Jeffrey, in various social media photographs. The couple met on Facebook in 2014 and married in a Jewish ceremony in 2020, where Canvasser declared in his vows: "You are the best decision I have ever made. I know I'm not the easiest person to deal with."
He added during the ceremony: "You have shown me patience, compassion, and how to take a step back and breathe, you make me want to be a better person every day just by being you." Prior to his Secret Service training, Canvasser had been living with his husband in Michigan after relocating from New York to be with Jeffrey and their three dogs following their online meeting.
Before applying to become a special agent, Canvasser served as a civilian analyst assigned to the Office of Strategic Information and Intelligence, which monitors and assesses threats to the president and others under Secret Service protection. He had been training at the federal law enforcement facility after joining the Secret Service in the fall of 2025, with his career now in jeopardy following these serious allegations.
