The widow of Sisto Malaspina, the 74-year-old café owner murdered during the Bourke Street terror attack in Melbourne, has publicly thanked the public for their support. Vicky Malaspina broke her silence in an interview with 9News, expressing gratitude for the outpouring of love her family has received since the tragedy on November 9.
Mr Malaspina was fatally stabbed by Hassan Khalif Shire Ali, 30, as he ran to assist what he believed was a car crash victim. Two others were injured in the attack, which ended when Ali was shot dead by police. A state funeral was held for Mr Malaspina at St Patrick's Cathedral on November 20, attended by hundreds.
Mrs Malaspina spoke of a planned street party in March to honour her late husband, organised by top restaurateurs as part of the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival. 'Sisto would be rapt, he loved a party,' she said. The Italian-themed event on Crossley Street, near his café, will cost $75 per ticket, with $5 from each going to the Salvation Army.
While there have been calls to rename Crossley Street after Mr Malaspina, Lord Mayor Sally Capp indicated it was unlikely due to cost and process, but said other memorials are being considered. Mr Malaspina's son David said his father would be at the party in spirit.
