Nottingham Murder Suspect Appears in Court
A 20-year-old man has been charged with murder following the fatal stabbing of Marley Gascoine in the St Ann's district of Nottingham. Matthew Smith from Carlton appeared at Nottingham Magistrates' Court on Saturday morning, where he was remanded in custody.
Tragic Incident on Abbotsford Drive
Police were called to Abbotsford Drive in St Ann's at 12.50pm on Monday, November 10, after reports that a young man had been found with serious stab wounds. The victim, identified as 20-year-old Marley Gascoine, received immediate treatment from paramedics at the scene but tragically died shortly afterwards.
A post-mortem examination later confirmed that Mr Gascoine died from a single stab wound to the chest. The area was cordoned off for forensic investigation as police began their hunt for those responsible.
Court Appearance and Ongoing Investigation
Matthew Smith appeared before magistrates Geoffrey Evans, Claire Stokes, and Christine Wright during a brief preliminary hearing. The defendant, wearing a grey sweatshirt and jogging bottoms, spoke only to confirm his name, address, and date of birth.
Prosecutor Emma Price and defence counsel Arjun Madahar were present during the hearing. Smith was told he would be remanded in custody until his next appearance at Nottingham Crown Court on Tuesday, November 18.
Detective Chief Inspector Ruby Burrow, who is leading the investigation, stated: "Mr Gascoine's family have been informed of this important development. Officers will continue to support the family and the thoughts of the investigative team remain with them."
She added: "I hope the wider community in St Ann's are comforted by our response which has seen this suspect arrested, charged and placed before the courts."
Family Tributes and Community Impact
In an emotional tribute, Marley Gascoine's mother described her son as her "first born" who would "always hold a special place in my heart". She called him "a fantastic son and big brother, grandson and nephew" who would be missed tremendously by all who knew him.
"The pain we all feel is indescribable," she said. "As a mum, there will forever be a piece of my heart missing."
Police have confirmed that another 20-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder but has since been released on bail. The investigation continues, with officers appealing for anyone with information to come forward.
