Murder Investigation Launched Following Fatal Stabbing Near University Campus
Leicestershire Police have initiated a murder investigation after a man in his 20s was fatally stabbed near De Montfort University in Leicester. The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon, prompting a significant police response and ongoing disruption in the city centre.
Details of the Tragic Incident
Emergency services were called to Oxford Street, close to the junction with Bonners Lane, at approximately 5pm on Tuesday following reports that a man had collapsed. While officers were en route to the scene, it was confirmed that the individual had sustained stab wounds.
The victim was swiftly transported to Leicester Royal Infirmary but, despite the best efforts of medical staff, he succumbed to his injuries a short time later. Police have confirmed that the deceased was a man in his 20s.
Arrest and Ongoing Police Inquiry
An 18-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody. Preliminary investigations suggest the victim was involved in an altercation with another man on the street prior to the stabbing. The other individual left the scene before police arrival.
Senior Investigating Officer Detective Inspector Lorna Granville stated: "We are currently piecing together exactly what has occurred on the corner of Oxford Street and Bonners Lane between, what is reported, as two men involved in a confrontation. One of the men is believed to have been stabbed and has then collapsed in the street."
Appeal for Witnesses and Evidence
Police are actively reviewing CCTV footage from the area and speaking to potential witnesses. Detective Inspector Granville emphasised the importance of public assistance, noting that many people came to the victim's aid before emergency services arrived.
Key appeals from police include:
- Witnesses who have not yet come forward are urged to contact authorities.
- Motorists who were driving along Oxford Street around 5pm are asked to check dash cam footage.
- Anyone with information should call 101, quoting incident number 495 of February 3.
Several roads remain closed in the vicinity as the investigation continues, causing significant disruption. Police have assured the public that local officers will conduct reassurance patrols in the area over the coming days.
