Police officers in New South Wales have shot and killed a man armed with a bow and arrow during a welfare check, marking the third fatal incident involving state police this year.
Welfare Check Turns Fatal
Authorities were called to a residence in Gunnedah, near Tamworth, at 1:40 PM on Friday following concerns for a man's welfare. Upon arrival, officers spoke with the man outside his home. The situation escalated when he retreated inside and emerged armed with a bow and arrow, forcing police to take cover behind their vehicle.
Officers Forced to Open Fire
Police allege the man then aimed the weapon at them, prompting officers to discharge their firearms. Paramedics provided treatment at the scene, but the man could not be saved. A critical incident investigation has been launched into the shooting and will be overseen by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.
A Troubling Start to the Year
This incident is at least the third fatality resulting from interactions with NSW police in 2024. On 5 January, a man died in hospital after suffering a medical episode following the use of pepper spray during an arrest related to a domestic violence report in Sydney's inner west.
Just two days later, on 7 January, police shot dead a 49-year-old man during a six-hour siege. That man, believed to be experiencing a mental health episode, had barricaded himself inside a house, armed himself with glass, and seized an officer before being shot.
The series of events has placed renewed focus on police protocols, particularly during welfare checks and interactions with individuals in crisis.
