A quiet evening in the rural Victorian town of Porepunkah was shattered by a targeted shooting that has left one man dead and a woman fighting for her life in hospital.
Police were called to a property on Pioneer Road just after 11pm on Tuesday night following reports of gunshots. Upon arrival, officers discovered a grim scene: a man, believed to be in his 40s, had sustained fatal gunshot wounds and died at the scene.
A second victim, a woman also thought to be in her 40s, was found with serious injuries. She was airlifted to Royal Melbourne Hospital where she remains in a critical but stable condition.
Police Launch Major Investigation
Victoria Police have confirmed they are treating the incident as a targeted attack and do not believe there is an ongoing threat to the wider community. Detective Acting Superintendent David Newman stated that the shooting was "not a random incident".
"We believe the victims were known to the offender," he said. "Our thoughts are with the victims and their families during this difficult time."
A major police investigation is now underway, with detectives from the Armed Crime Squad and local officers combing the area for evidence. A crime scene has been established and forensic specialists are conducting a thorough examination of the property.
Community in Shock
The attack has sent shockwaves through the small community of Porepunkah, a town nestled in the foothills of the Victorian Alps, known for its orchards and tranquil setting.
Local residents have expressed their disbelief that such a violent act could occur in their peaceful town. One neighbour described the area as "usually very quiet" and expressed sympathy for those involved.
Police are urging anyone with information, including dashcam footage or CCTV from the Pioneer Road area between 10pm and midnight on Tuesday, to come forward and contact Crime Stoppers.
