Tottenham Hotspur Edge Closer to Roberto De Zerbi Appointment

Roberto De Zerbi is poised to accept the significant challenge of preserving Tottenham Hotspur's Premier League status, with negotiations between the club and the Italian manager reaching an advanced stage, according to Press Association reports. The 46-year-old, who departed Marseille in February, had initially planned to wait until the summer to evaluate his options, but appears ready to reverse that decision and assume control at Spurs without delay.

Swift Managerial Shift Following Tudor's Departure

Spurs redirected their focus to De Zerbi after parting ways with interim head coach Igor Tudor on Sunday. Tudor's brief and tumultuous 44-day tenure resulted in five defeats across seven matches, accompanied by a series of dubious tactical decisions, intensifying the genuine threat of Tottenham's first relegation since 1977. This precarious situation compelled the club to make one final decisive move in their managerial search.

With fan favourite Mauricio Pochettino committed to leading the United States at this summer's World Cup, De Zerbi has emerged as the most suitable and available candidate currently on the market. Italian media reports on Monday indicated De Zerbi's willingness to engage with Tottenham's approach, noting a five-year contract offer is on the table. This appointment would make him the club's fourth head coach within the past ten months.

De Zerbi's Longstanding Links to Tottenham

De Zerbi has been associated with the Tottenham vacancy for several years, initially in 2023 and more persistently over the last month following Thomas Frank's departure on February 11. After leaving Marseille in the same week, a hiatus until the season's end was anticipated. Consequently, Tottenham turned to Tudor as an interim solution, but his unsuccessful stint has accelerated the pursuit of a permanent replacement.

First-team coach Bruno Saltor was entrusted with overseeing training for players not on international duty after Tudor's exit. However, Tottenham anticipate finalising a new head coach by mid-week, providing approximately ten days of preparation ahead of the crucial April 12 fixture against Sunderland. De Zerbi is expected to be that appointment.

Fan Concerns Over Past Comments

The prospective hiring of De Zerbi is not without controversy among the Tottenham supporter base. On Friday, three prominent fan groups—Proud Lilywhites, Women of the Lane, and Spurs Reach—issued 'No to De Zerbi' statements, expressing reservations due to his previous remarks about Marseille forward Mason Greenwood.

Greenwood faced charges in October 2022, including attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm, related to allegations involving a young woman after online posts surfaced. The Crown Prosecution Service discontinued the charges in February 2023, citing withdrawn key witnesses and new evidence that diminished the likelihood of conviction. Greenwood has since resumed his professional career, joining Marseille in 2024.

In November, while managing Marseille, De Zerbi described Greenwood as a "good guy" and added, "It saddens me what happened in his life, because I know a totally different person than the one who was described." These comments have sparked concern among some Tottenham supporters regarding the manager's judgment.

Pochettino Rules Out Immediate Return

Meanwhile, Mauricio Pochettino addressed speculation linking him to Tottenham or Real Madrid during a press conference on Monday. He stated, "We have our full focus here on the World Cup. I think everyone knows that I am committed with the national team. I think there's no point to talk about the future. At the moment no [team] has approached." This clarification reinforces De Zerbi's position as the leading candidate for the Tottenham role as the club seeks stability amid a turbulent season.
