Man Dies in Floodwater Fleeing Police After Caravan Chase

A tragic incident unfolded in Derbyshire on Saturday when a man lost his life after entering floodwater while attempting to evade police officers. The pursuit began after authorities identified a vehicle towing a caravan that was suspected to have been stolen from the Oakerthorpe area.

Dramatic Police Chase Ends in Tragedy

According to Derbyshire Police, officers were in pursuit of the vehicle when the two male occupants inside rammed police cars during the chase. The pursuit was eventually brought to a halt near Egginton, prompting both men to flee the scene on foot.

Desperate Escape into Flooded Waters

While one suspect was apprehended shortly after fleeing and taken into custody, the other made a fateful decision to enter the flooded Egginton Brook near the River Trent. This desperate attempt to escape led to a multi-hour search operation involving both police and Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service personnel.

The man was eventually recovered from the water and received immediate medical attention from ambulance crews at the scene. He was subsequently transported to Royal Derby Hospital, where medical staff pronounced him deceased.

Police Referral to Independent Watchdog

Because the death occurred following police contact, Derbyshire Police has made a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC). This standard procedure ensures independent oversight of incidents involving fatalities after police interaction.

Formal identification of the deceased has not yet been completed, and authorities are continuing their efforts to locate and notify his next of kin. The police force has emphasized that this process is being handled with appropriate sensitivity given the circumstances.

Charges Filed Against Apprehended Suspect

Meanwhile, the second man involved in the incident has been formally charged. Adrian Osiecki, a 34-year-old from Harnall Lane West in Coventry, faces multiple charges including dangerous driving, failing to stop for police officers, criminal damage to police vehicles, driving without insurance, driving while disqualified, and theft of a caravan.

Osiecki is scheduled to appear before Southern Derbyshire Magistrates' Court on Monday to answer these charges. The legal proceedings will proceed separately from the investigation into the death of his companion during the escape attempt.

This incident highlights the dangerous consequences that can result from attempts to flee law enforcement, particularly when combined with hazardous environmental conditions like floodwaters. The community awaits further developments as both the criminal case and the independent police conduct investigation proceed.
