Death in Paradise Star Daniel Ward Details Painful On-Set Error

Actor Daniel Ward has candidly shared a painful mistake he made during the filming of the BBC's beloved crime drama, Death in Paradise. In a recent interview, the rising star opened up about an incident that occurred while shooting episode two of the series, which he vows never to repeat.

The Tear Stick Incident That Caught Him Off Guard

Ward, who portrays Solomon, the long-lost brother of DI Mervin Wilson played by Don Gilet, explained that the mishap involved the use of a tear stick on set. He recounted, "The thing that I found most surprising on set was the impact of the tear stick. In episode two, when we got covered in the hot pepper sauce, somebody had the bright idea of using a tear stick, and I've never used one before."

He described making a classic error by underestimating its potency. "I just put a little bit on, and then I made a classic mistake. I was like, 'Oh, that's not doing anything,' but boy was I wrong. When you see episode two, you will see my eyes are red and streaming. That is not acting; that is the effect of being overconfident and thinking I could handle it. That stuff burns!" Ward emphasized that while the tear stick was useful for the scene, its strength was far greater than he anticipated.

Context of the Episode and Character Dynamics

The incident took place during a pivotal moment in the series, where Solomon's cunning nature as a con-artist unfolds, dragging his brother Mervin into turbulent drama. The finale tested their relationship to breaking point, with Mervin being abducted and tied to a chair after visiting Solomon in Antigua. Ward's insights come as he commemorates the show's 15th anniversary on television, highlighting the challenges and surprises of working on such a cherished programme.

Future of Death in Paradise Confirmed

This revelation follows an exciting announcement about the future of Death in Paradise. After the conclusion of the 15th series last month, which left audiences wondering about another installment, BBC executives have confirmed a Christmas special set to air in December. The show's official Instagram account posted, "That's the end of this series, but the good news is, we'll be back... at Christmas!"

Fans quickly expressed their enthusiasm online, with comments ranging from praise for the series to requests for more episodes. One user wrote, "Before Christmas please. Best series ever!" while another added, "I actually thought this one was one of my absolute favourites. My wife and I are diehard fans from the beginning." A third fan noted, "I really wish there were more episodes in a series, but this is why I binge-watch old series to get me through until Christmas."

The series finale featured a touching moment where Detective Mervin Wilson chose to let his niece remain with him on the fictional island of Saint Marie after her father completed his prison sentence, adding emotional depth to the storyline. As Ward reflects on his on-set experience and the show's continued success, viewers can look forward to more drama and surprises in the upcoming Christmas special.
