A man has tragically died after falling from a boat into the sea near the south coastal town of Newhaven, according to Sussex Police.
Major Search Operation Launched
The incident was first reported to HM Coastguard at 10:19am on Sunday, 30 November. The alarm was raised after the man went overboard from a vessel in the waters off Newhaven late on Sunday morning.
This triggered an immediate and extensive search and rescue mission coordinated by the Coastguard. The operation involved RNLI lifeboats from both Shoreham and Newhaven, demonstrating a multi-agency response. They were joined by an HM Coastguard rescue helicopter, a fixed-wing aircraft, and two nearby vessels that were in the vicinity and assisted in the search efforts.
Body Recovered from the Sea
Sussex Police confirmed they were informed by the Coastguard about the incident at 11.40am. The intensive search, led by the Coastguard, resulted in the recovery of a body from the sea.
In a statement, Sussex Police said, "The man has been identified and his next of kin have been informed. Our thoughts are with them at this difficult time."
The police have confirmed that enquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing. No further details about the man or the specific vessel involved have been released at this stage.
