Indian National Charged with Sexual Assault on Flight to Perth
A 52-year-old Indian national has been formally charged by Australian authorities for allegedly committing sexual assault against a fellow passenger during a flight to Perth. The incident occurred on a Scoot Airlines service travelling from Singapore to Perth in the early hours of Monday morning, according to statements from the Australian Federal Police.
Details of the Alleged Assault
The Australian Federal Police allege that the suspect engaged in non-consensual sexual acts against a woman who was seated adjacent to him on the budget airline flight. The flight departed Singapore at approximately 3am local time on Monday and landed at Perth Airport around 8am the same day. Upon the woman reporting the incident to cabin crew, she was promptly relocated to another seat for her safety and comfort.
Scoot Airlines staff then monitored the accused individual for the remainder of the journey before notifying federal police officers, who boarded the aircraft immediately upon its arrival in Perth. The suspect was escorted to an interview room at the airport and subsequently placed under arrest.
Legal Proceedings and Charges
The man appeared before the Perth Magistrates Court on Tuesday, where he was formally charged with one count of sexual intercourse without consent, an offence that carries a maximum prison sentence of twelve years under Australian law. Additionally, he was charged with one count of an act of indecency without consent, which is punishable by up to seven years imprisonment.
The court remanded the defendant in custody, with his next hearing scheduled for Friday. This legal action underscores the serious nature of the allegations and the swift response by law enforcement.
Police Statement on Passenger Safety
Acting Superintendent Peter Brindal of the Australian Federal Police emphasised the organisation's zero-tolerance policy towards criminal behaviour on aircraft or within airport precincts. Every passenger has the right to feel safe when travelling, especially when confined in an aircraft close to other passengers, Brindal stated in an official release.
He further encouraged any individuals subjected to unwanted contact or indecent acts to alert authorities—whether airline staff, federal police, or airport security—as soon as it is safely possible to do so. No act of indecency on an aircraft or at an airport is appropriate, and any travellers who break the law will be dealt with swiftly, Brindal affirmed.
Ongoing Investigation
The case is currently under joint investigation by the Australian Federal Police and the Western Australia sex assault squad. This collaborative approach aims to ensure a thorough examination of all evidence and circumstances surrounding the alleged assault.
The spokesperson for Scoot Airlines confirmed that the passenger involved was handed over to relevant authorities upon arrival in Perth, reiterating the airline's commitment to passenger safety and cooperation with law enforcement.
