Cork Man Appears in Court Following Family Tragedy

A 25-year-old man has been formally charged with the murder of his mother and the assault of his father following a violent incident at a family home in Cork. David Gallagher, of Shrewsbury Downs in Ballinlough, stood before Cork District Court this afternoon after a stabbing occurred on Monday night.

Emergency Response and Fatal Outcome

Gardai and emergency services were called to the address at Shrewsbury Downs at approximately 9pm on Monday. Upon arrival, they discovered a devastating scene. Stella Gallagher, aged 59, was rushed to Cork University Hospital but was tragically pronounced dead. She was a respected chemical engineer who had worked for many years at the multinational pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly in Cork.

Her husband, Brian Gallagher, 63, was also injured in the attack and survived.

Court Proceedings and Custody Arrangements

During the court session, evidence was presented by Dt Sgt Niall Hayes of Blackrock Garda Station. He confirmed that David Gallagher was charged at 1.27pm today and did not respond when the charges were read to him under caution. The defendant had been held for questioning at the Bridewell Garda Station prior to the hearing.

Sgt John Kelleher informed the court that the gardai will be seeking a remand in custody when the case returns to Cork District Court on November 26. As is standard for a murder charge, bail was not applied for at the district court level.

Defence solicitor Shane Collins Daly successfully applied for free legal aid for his client, who is currently unemployed. The solicitor also revealed that Gallagher had been under medical supervision while in custody, being seen by a practitioner roughly every eight hours and receiving medication.

Mr Collins Daly made a specific request for his client to receive urgent medical and psychiatric evaluation upon his arrival at Cork Prison. Judge John King approved this request, ordering that the defendant be provided with the necessary medical care while in prison.

The judge remanded Gallagher in custody to appear at Cork District Court on November 26 via video link.
