Firefighters have been working through the night to tackle a large fire at the Langar Airfield industrial estate in Nottinghamshire, with crews remaining at the scene for more than 12 hours. The blaze, which broke out on Thursday afternoon, has prompted warnings to residents about potentially hazardous smoke.
Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service received the first call at around 2:43pm on May 21. Fifteen fire engines from Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, and Leicestershire, along with approximately 90 firefighters, have been deployed. A high-volume pump, three water carriers, and a command unit are also on site.
A spokesperson for the fire service confirmed that crews are still at the scene and are rotating shifts. The smoke contains a number of different chemicals that cannot be immediately identified. Residents have been advised to keep windows and doors closed as a precaution.
Unconfirmed reports from local sources suggest that police have warned residents via megaphone about the possible presence of asbestos in the smoke, though this has not been officially confirmed by the force. The cause of the fire remains unknown.
