M66 Motorway Closed After Fatal Incident
A 19-year-old man has died after being struck by a car on the M66 motorway on Sunday evening, in an incident that police believe followed a pursuit.
Emergency services were called to the scene at Simister Island at around 9.40pm after reports that a pedestrian had been in collision with a vehicle travelling southbound.
Details of the Police Pursuit
Greater Manchester Police confirmed that the tragedy may have occurred after a police chase. Officers had initially spotted a blue BMW X3 being driven at speed on Bury Old Road.
The vehicle then went through a red light, prompting a police pursuit. Patrol officers subsequently lost sight of the BMW.
It was later found on the Junction 18 roundabout of the M60, where it is believed to have been abandoned after colliding with another vehicle.
Aftermath and Investigation
The M66 was closed overnight following the fatal collision to allow for a thorough investigation of the scene.
The identity of the 19-year-old pedestrian has not yet been released by the authorities. An investigation into the full circumstances surrounding the incident is ongoing.
