Buc-ee's Bans In-Store Fuel Prepayment, Sparks Customer Debate
Buc-ee's Ends In-Store Fuel Prepayment Policy

Buc-ee's has left fans reeling after rolling out a new rule that could fundamentally change the way customers fuel up at its famously over-the-top travel centers.

While it is, at its core, a gas station, Buc-ee's has long been treated by many Americans as something far bigger than that. For loyal visitors, it's part pit stop, part destination. Beyond its vast network of fuel pumps, the chain is known for its cult-favorite snacks like Beaver Nuggets, spotless bathrooms, and an endless aisle of branded merchandise. It has even earned the unofficial nickname: the 'Disneyland of gas stations'.

But fans will now find one familiar habit off the table. Customers can no longer head inside to prepay for fuel, after Buc-ee's introduced a new policy requiring all credit and debit card transactions to be completed at the pump. Over the past month, notices have appeared at locations advising motorists that the change took effect on March 1, 2026, and that in-store prepayment is no longer allowed.

The move has already sparked a lively debate, with some customers questioning whether it genuinely improves efficiency or simply strips away a layer of convenience that helped define the Buc-ee's experience. It also removes what some jokingly called the 'built-in excuse' to wander inside the cavernous stores and browse the beaver-branded merchandise - as well as eliminating the practice of sitting at a pump while making a purchase inside.

Supporters of the change argue the fix is straightforward: pay at the pump, move your vehicle promptly, and avoid turning fuel bays into parking spaces. 'The ones threatening to boycott over it are the ones us other customers don't want to deal with in the stores anyways so win win,' one pay-at-pump advocate wrote on Reddit.

Critics, however, remain unconvinced. Some say they prefer paying inside so they can combine filling up with grabbing snacks in a single transaction, while others say they deliberately avoid pump payments altogether due to fears over card skimming and fraud. 'I'm actually somewhat annoyed by this,' one critic said, explaining that when they purchase fuel for work, they prefer paying inside to ensure they receive a proper receipt for expenses. They added that they also like to use gift cards for gas purchases, but noted this has become more complicated under the current system, as the pre-authorization hold at the pump can exceed the value loaded on the card - effectively forcing customers to go inside anyway to complete the transaction.

Indeed, questions have now surfaced around the use of gift cards, with customers unsure how they fit into the revised system and whether they can still be used as seamlessly as before. That issue has already caused frustration. One Buc-ee's regular reportedly found himself stranded after driving on an empty tank to use a gift card, only to discover it could not be redeemed for fuel under the new rules. The disgruntled customer allegedly destroyed around $200 worth of merchandise in protest.

The changes come at a pivotal moment for the Texas-based travel center giant, which is preparing for a major expansion into seven new states. Buc-ee's has been aggressively expanding in recent months, rolling out ambitious plans to plant its supersized travel centers across even more states in 2026. Lucky states include Arizona, Florida, Ohio, North Carolina, and Kentucky.

Against that backdrop, the policy shift marks a notable - and for many customers, controversial - change in how Buc-ee's operates at the pump. The beloved Texas-born mega gas station chain boasts locations that sprawl across up to 75,000 square feet of land. The announcement of a new Buc-ee's location in Fort Pierce, Florida, made headlines in January after early plans suggested the gas station would span 76,000 square feet - about half the size of a Walmart Supercenter and even bigger than the company's current largest store in Luling, Texas.

More than a gas station, Buc-ee's has turned pit stops into destinations. Inside, shoppers can find freshly made barbecue sandwiches, mountains of the chain's famous Beaver Nuggets - the chain's caramelized corn puff snack - house-brand jerky cut and packaged on site, and aisles of branded apparel emblazoned with Buc-ee's grinning beaver mascot. Employees in bright red shirts hustle between checkout counters that often outnumber those in a supermarket, keeping lines moving even during holiday travel rushes.
