UK Counter-Terror Police Investigate Possible Iranian Links to Escalating Attacks on Jewish Community
Counter-terrorism police in the United Kingdom are actively investigating a group with potential connections to Iran, which is suspected of recruiting individuals to execute attacks against the Jewish community across the nation. This probe comes amid a concerning surge in violent incidents targeting Jewish sites, with the UK Chief Rabbi warning that these assaults are "gathering momentum."
Recent Arson Attack at London Synagogue
In the latest incident, an arson attack occurred at the Kenton United Synagogue in Harrow, London, described by Chief Rabbi Sir Ephraim Mirvis as "cowardly." The attack took place around midnight on Sunday, resulting in minor smoke damage to a room inside the building, though no injuries were reported. This event marks the third attack on Jewish sites in London within less than a week, following previous incidents in Finchley and Hendon.
Sir Ephraim emphasized the severity of the situation in a social media post, stating, "A sustained campaign of violence and intimidation against the Jewish community of the UK is gathering momentum." He added that while no lives have been lost, the danger to society is imminent and must not be ignored.
Police Investigation and Possible Iranian Connections
Deputy Assistant Commissioner Vicki Evans of the Metropolitan Police revealed that experienced detectives are investigating these attacks, which have also targeted a Persian language media organisation and ambulances operated by the Jewish community in North London. The group Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamiya, also known as the Islamic Movement of the Companions of the Right, has claimed responsibility for some of these assaults.
DAC Evans noted, "The same group, in recent months, have claimed attacks across Europe, also happening at similar premises, such as Jewish and Israeli premises." She assured that regardless of motivation, those facilitating or committing these acts will not be tolerated, and efforts to create division and hate will not succeed.
As the conflict in the Middle East continues, counter-terrorism policing remains vigilant to the threat of Iranian hostile activity in the UK. DAC Evans confirmed, "We are aware of public reporting that suggests this group may have links to Iran – as you would expect we will continue to explore that question as our investigation evolves."
Political and Community Responses
Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the attacks as "abhorrent" and stressed that such violence "will not be tolerated." The Metropolitan Police have established a large cordon at the scene, with forensics officers, plainclothes officers, and other investigators working diligently. No arrests have been made at this time, but the investigation is ongoing.
This series of attacks underscores a growing concern for the safety and security of the Jewish community in the UK, with authorities urging vigilance and cooperation to prevent further incidents.
