DJ Priest Hosts Rave Honouring Late Pope Francis in Buenos Aires

A Portuguese Catholic priest, Father Guilherme Peixoto, hosted a free techno rave in Buenos Aires on Saturday to honour the late Pope Francis, who passed away in April 2025. The event, held at the historic Plaza de Mayo, drew a diverse crowd of young and old, Catholics and agnostics, who danced to a mix of techno and religious melodies.

Global Sensation and Musical Inspiration

Peixoto, better known as Padre Guilherme, has become a global sensation with 2.8 million Instagram followers and over 220,000 monthly Spotify streams. Ordained in 1999, he initially kept his DJ hobby private, fearing reprisals from church superiors. However, Pope Francis's messages of courage and outreach inspired him to pursue music openly.

He enrolled in a DJ school, collaborated with producers, and began performing at festivals worldwide, gaining prominence after his sets at World Youth Day in 2023. Peixoto credits the late Pope for encouraging his unique blend of faith and music.

Event Highlights and Public Reaction

During the rave, three large screens projected images of Pope Francis and Pope John Paul II, alongside white doves, while Peixoto mixed tracks from his console. Attendees, such as 54-year-old Jesús Martín, praised the free event, contrasting it with expensive club nights in Ibiza.

Many, like 60-year-old Silvia Garaggiola, attended to remember Pope Francis, appreciating the respectful and original tribute. The setlist included Peixoto's hit "El Grano de Mostaza" and remixes of artists like Bad Bunny and Queen.

Bridging Generations Through Music

Peixoto uses his DJ performances to evangelise youth, addressing barriers like the Church's resistance to modernisation and scandals. At the rave, teenagers danced amid laser lights and smoke, with non-religious attendees like 17-year-old Ileana González enjoying the music.

He aims to promote peace and happiness, inspired by artists like Carl Cox and Anyma, and continues Pope Francis's mission of connecting with younger generations through innovative means.
