Closing arguments are set for Tuesday in the trial of Gerhardt Konig, a 47-year-old anesthesiologist accused of attempting to murder his wife during a hike in Honolulu. The incident occurred in March 2025 on the Pali Puka trail, where prosecutors allege Konig tried to push Arielle Konig off a cliff, struck her with a rock, and attempted to stab her with a syringe.
The couple, who have two young sons, were on a weekend trip from Maui for Arielle's birthday. The trial, livestreamed by Court TV, has revealed marital tensions, including Konig's discovery of what he described as an affair between his wife and a coworker. Arielle characterised the relationship as an 'emotional affair' involving flirtatious messages.
Arielle testified that her husband grabbed her and moved her toward the cliff edge, but she threw herself to the ground. She said he straddled her with a syringe, which she batted away, and she bit his forearm and squeezed his testicles to escape. Konig denied pushing her, claiming she struck him with a rock first and that he hit her twice in self-defence after wrestling the rock away. He also denied possessing any syringes.
Two hikers who heard Arielle's screams assisted her down the trail. Konig testified that after watching his wife crawl away, he believed his marriage and career were over and contemplated suicide. He called his adult son from a previous marriage, who told authorities his father said he 'tried to kill your stepmom'—a confession Konig denies. He spent hours on the mountain before surrendering to police.
The Pali Puka trail, meaning 'pierced cliff' in Hawaiian, is officially closed due to safety concerns, but hikers often ignore warning signs. The case has drawn significant attention, highlighting issues of domestic violence.
