Tragic Death of 12-Year-Old Georgia Student Following Bus Stop Altercation
A 12-year-old girl from Georgia has died days after she collapsed in the street following a physical altercation near a school bus stop in her suburban neighbourhood, according to local police authorities. The death of sixth grader Jada West is now under active investigation by the Villa Rica Police Department, located approximately 30 miles west of Atlanta.
Police Investigation and Evidence Review Underway
Sergeant Spencer Crawford, a police spokesman, confirmed on Wednesday that investigators are meticulously examining all available evidence, which includes cellphone footage capturing the incident. Authorities are also awaiting the results of a full autopsy to determine the precise cause of death. Crawford stated that police plan to convene with prosecutors later this week, who will ultimately make the decision regarding whether criminal charges will be filed in connection with this tragic case.
The altercation between Jada and another student from Mason Creek Middle School erupted at an intersection close to the girl's residence on Thursday afternoon, Crawford detailed. Cellphone video, subsequently posted on social media by Jada's aunt, shows a school bus departing the scene more than ninety seconds before any physical blows are exchanged. The footage depicts Jada and another girl shouting and taunting one another while maintaining a significant distance apart, with a group of classmates observing the confrontation.
Details from the Cellphone Footage
In the video, an individual can be heard questioning, “Who is going to fight you over some noise?” Both girls are seen placing their backpacks on the ground almost simultaneously before advancing towards each other and beginning to throw punches. Within moments, the pair tumble to the pavement, grappling with one another. Jada lands on her back and rolls backward in a manner that brings her feet over her head and neck. Both girls subsequently stand up before an adult woman intervenes, instructing Jada to return home. The clip concludes with Jada retrieving her backpack and appearing to walk away.
What transpired immediately after the video ended remains unclear, but Jada did not arrive home. Police were dispatched following a distress call reporting “a young juvenile who was in cardiac arrest laying in the street.” Upon arrival, paramedics were already on site, loading the girl into an ambulance while performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Paramedics informed officers that an adult bystander had been administering CPR when they first arrived. Jada was swiftly transported to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment.
Family's Heartbreaking Announcement and Community Mourning
On Sunday, Jada's mother, Rashunda McClendon, shared a video on Facebook pleading, “please pray for my baby. She's fighting for her life.” Later that same day, Jada's aunt, De'Quala McClendon, announced via Facebook that her niece had tragically passed away, writing, “Now you got your spiritual crown, it hurts so so bad but I know you are ok.” Rashunda McClendon declined to comment when approached by an Associated Press reporter at her home on Wednesday.
A makeshift memorial emerged near the scene of the fight, featuring a paper sign stating, “RIP JADA WEST,” accompanied by the message: “Heaven gain an angel.” A floral bouquet and a plastic pinwheel were placed beside the tribute, reflecting the community's grief.
Official Statements from District Attorney and School District
Douglas County District Attorney Dalia Racine issued a statement confirming her office is aware of the ongoing police investigation into Jada's death but offered no additional commentary at this time. The Douglas County School System released a separate statement describing Jada as “an upbeat, kind, and vibrant student.” The district confirmed that counselling services have been made available at the school to support students and staff members affected by this loss.
The school district's statement further clarified, “This incident did not occur on school property or during school hours, and there is nothing to indicate that this is related to any on-campus activity.” The investigation continues as authorities work to piece together the full sequence of events leading to this devastating outcome.
