Fugitive 'Master of Disguise' Faces Identity Theft Charges in San Diego Court
A convicted felon described by law enforcement as a 'master of disguise' made an appearance in San Diego federal court on Monday, facing serious charges of identity theft. Tyler Adams, 54, is also wanted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation for questioning regarding the death of his girlfriend, Racquel Sabean, whose body was discovered inside a vehicle in Mexico during 2022.
Charges and Criminal History
Adams is specifically charged with using another individual's Arizona driver's license to illegally enter the United States from the southern border. This border crossing occurred just weeks after Sabean's remains were found. Officials revealed that Adams has utilized over a dozen aliases throughout his criminal career and previously escaped from a prison in Hawaii.
In Hawaii, he was serving a 14-year sentence for stealing the identities of his mother and stepfather in a real estate fraud scheme worth $180,000. Adams managed to abscond from custody in May 2019 while participating in a work furlough program, having completed approximately half of his prison term at that time.
The Disappearance and Death of Racquel Sabean
After his escape, Adams remained a fugitive for nearly three years before traveling to Tijuana, Mexico, in April 2022 with Sabean and their seven-month-old daughter. Sabean subsequently went missing, and about one month later in late May, her decomposed body was located by Mexican authorities in her mother's Volkswagen Jetta.
Local residents had reported a 'foul odor' emanating from the vehicle, leading to the grim discovery. An Amber Alert was issued for the infant on June 8, and the child was found safe approximately one week later. Coincidentally, Adams was apprehended by Mexican police on the same day for alleged drunk driving.
Re-entry into the United States and Apprehension
When detained in Tecate, Adams presented officers with an Arizona driver's license under the name Aaron Lee Bain, a 28-year-old individual. Authorities then transferred him to Customs and Border Protection, and he allegedly used this fraudulent identification to cross back into the United States on June 16, 2022.
The following day, the San Diego FBI issued a statement indicating Adams was wanted for questioning in connection with his girlfriend's murder and noted his recent re-entry into the country. The FBI also highlighted his status as an escapee from the Hawaii state prison system.
Adams evaded capture for about a year and a half before finally being arrested in Orange County, California, in late 2023. In 2024, he was convicted for the Hawaii prison escape and received an additional five-year sentence, to be served consecutively with the remaining seven years of his prior term.
Court Proceedings and Speculation
During Monday's court appearance, Adams entered a plea of not guilty to charges of aggravated identity theft and making a false statement. While Mexican authorities have identified him as the primary suspect in Sabean's death, no formal charges have been filed in that case.
Photographs of Adams reveal varying appearances, with sometimes swollen or shiny facial skin, fueling widespread speculation that he has undergone plastic surgery procedures. His own stepfather confirmed to media outlets that Adams had plastic surgery at least once in his late teens or early twenties, suggesting it may have been for psychological reasons.
Family Reactions and Ongoing Investigation
Sabean's father, David Sabean, expressed strong conviction about Adams's involvement, stating in 2022 that he 'would bet [his] life' that Adams was responsible for his daughter's killing. Adams's stepfather also acknowledged the seriousness of the situation during an interview, remarking, 'I know he was a butthead, but to take another life? My god.'
When reminded that Adams had not been convicted and was merely wanted for questioning, the stepfather responded, 'They're not hunting him and you're not calling me because it's an outside chance.' The case continues to develop as authorities pursue further evidence and potential charges related to Sabean's death.
