Tributes are pouring in for a 'much loved' father who was discovered fatally injured on school grounds in Wolverhampton. Neil Thompson, affectionately known as 'Chuck' to his friends and family, was pronounced dead on the premises of Smestow Academy in the Castlecroft area on Monday morning.
Discovery by Pupils and Immediate Response
Local residents walking near the area yesterday morning have indicated that the body was found by a pupil at the school as they were gathering outside for a physical education class. This distressing discovery prompted an immediate emergency response, with police and other services rushing to the scene.
Police Investigation Underway
West Midlands Police have confirmed they are treating Mr Thompson's death as unexplained and have launched a comprehensive investigation. Officers are reviewing CCTV footage from the vicinity and conducting thorough door-to-door enquiries to gather crucial evidence. The force has emphasised that specialist officers are supporting the grieving family during this devastating time.
Family's Heartfelt Appeal
In a poignant statement released today, Mr Thompson's family described him as their 'beautiful son, brother, father and friend Chuck', highlighting that he was 'very much loved in the community of fishing, his one true love'. They added: 'His love for life and funny stories touched the lives of so many people.' The family is now urging anyone with information or sightings to come forward, stating: 'To help us find closure as a family we urge anyone with any information or sightings to please get in touch.'
School Closure and Forensic Work
Following the tragic discovery, children were sent home and Smestow Academy was closed for the day to allow police to conduct their investigations undisturbed. A blue forensics tent was later erected at the scene to shield the area from public view, with the entire site cordoned off using police tape.
Last Known Movements and Description
Investigators have pieced together some of Mr Thompson's final movements. He was last seen on Wheatsheaf Road in Wolverhampton at 1am on Monday, before being sighted on the school grounds at approximately 7.15am. At the time, he was wearing a distinctive camouflage jacket, a grey gilet, jeans, and a beanie hat. He was also carrying a red rucksack and may have been wearing sunglasses.
Police Reassurance and Call for Information
Superintendent Martin Hurcomb from Wolverhampton Police addressed the public, saying: 'Our teams are continuing to investigate the circumstances around this tragic incident and we are offering support to Mr Thompson's family. Inquiries are moving ahead as investigators work to piece together his movements and we'd ask again that anyone who may have seen Mr Thompson in the early hours of yesterday does get in touch.'
