The family of a Missouri man who was tragically killed in a pit bull attack is urging the local community to move beyond negative rhetoric about the breed and instead focus on creating a positive legacy in his memory. Tyler Brennan, a 41-year-old father, was returning home from work on Wednesday in Independence, approximately 20 minutes outside Kansas City, when his roommate's pit bull named Bruce suddenly attacked him.
A Community Divided by Tragedy
The pit bull fatally mauled Brennan and was subsequently shot dead by officers from the Independence Police Department after they responded to the emergency scene. This devastating incident has ignited a heated debate within the community, with many residents targeting pit bulls specifically, citing the breed's controversial reputation for potential aggression.
However, Brennan's family has expressed a desire for his death to foster unity and constructive change rather than division. They have observed numerous social media comments blaming either the dog's upbringing or its genetic background for the lethal assault.
Family's Plea for Respect and Education
Stephen Burton, the longtime boyfriend of Carla Jones, Brennan's mother, addressed the public reaction in an interview with FOX4 News. He stated, "All the people that have been getting on there making comments about pit bulls, making comments about IPD, making comments in general about what we should do. I know what we are going to do – and the simple answer is we are going to remember Tyler for who he was, and we are going to do it with respect."
Burton emphasized that the family hopes to see the community collaborate to establish an educational program aimed at individuals considering adoption of dog breeds known for dangerous tendencies. He explained, "Bottom line is: let’s do this the right way. Let’s not upset a group of people who have a group of dogs, and let’s get a program going to educate people on dogs' behaviors."
Background on the Dog and Family's Stance
Burton also provided insight into Brennan's relationship with the pit bull, noting that the dog had previously attacked one of its owners, as reported to WKRC. Despite this history, Burton described how Brennan frequently played with the animal, engaging in activities like ball games, and considered his two housemates to be his best friends.
The family has firmly rejected suggestions to pursue legal action against the dog's owner or the police for shooting the pit bull. Burton asserted, "We aren't into destroying another life," highlighting their commitment to avoiding further conflict. Some upset locals have even proposed that the family challenge the city's decision to lift a breed-specific ban in 2023, which originally targeted pit bulls but was replaced with a dangerous dog ordinance focusing on behavior rather than breed.

Burton expressed hope that he and Brennan's family can work alongside city officials to develop a program that better equips people to handle aggressive dog breeds. He told FOX4 News that he plans to meet with the mayors of Independence and nearby Lee's Summit after the April election to discuss his ideas further and is also open to conversations with Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas.

Tyler Brennan is survived by his mother, Carla Jones, his brother Matt, numerous friends, and his 13-year-old daughter Brylee. Jones shared with WKRC that after learning of her father's death, Brylee sent a heartfelt "I love you" message to his phone. Jones added, "She’s having a really hard time. She cried herself to sleep. She's going to miss her daddy."
