Former Maori All Blacks captain Dinny Ratema Mohi has died at the age of 85 following a car crash while traveling to an ANZAC Day dawn service in Ohinemutu, Rotorua.

Details of the accident

The accident occurred as his daughter Wendy was driving the vehicle. They collided with oncoming traffic while rounding a bend. Wendy suffered two broken ribs and a broken sternum, but expressed that the 'crash took my papa.' She described him as a 'legend' and said, 'We will carry him with us forever.'

Rugby career

Mohi began his rugby journey at Old Boys in Rotorua before representing Bay of Plenty from 1961 to 1977, playing 156 matches. He later captained the Maori All Blacks in 1969, a testament to his leadership and skill.

Tennis and community involvement

After retiring from rugby, Mohi took up tennis and became a regular at the Aotearoa Maori Tennis Championships. His dedication was recognized when he was made a life member of Maori Tennis by the Kingitanga at Ngaruawahia.

Te Arawa FM paid tribute on Facebook, stating, 'Rotorua farewells respected kaumatua and rugby stalwart Dinny Mohi.'
