Doctors are issuing an urgent warning to parents and teens about the resurgence of the deadly 'Benadryl Challenge' on social media, particularly TikTok. The trend, which first emerged in 2020, dares individuals to intentionally consume excessive amounts of the over-the-counter allergy medication and resist its drowsy side effects to achieve a high.
Health Risks of Benadryl Overdose
Taking too much Benadryl, whose active ingredient is diphenhydramine, can lead to serious health consequences, including elevated heart rate, urinary retention that may cause kidney dysfunction, and arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat). In severe cases, it can result in seizures, coma, or death.
FDA Warning and Recent Cases
In 2020, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning about the dangers of high-dose Benadryl consumption. Dr. Stephanie Felton, associate medical director of the emergency department at Cook Children’s Medical Center in Texas, reported one recent death linked to the challenge. The hospital has treated over 100 patients for Benadryl overdoses in the past six months. Although the number of overdoses is lower than during the initial surge in 2020, the rise among teens and pre-teens remains concerning.
FDA Actions and Recommendations
The FDA stated, 'We are aware of news reports of teenagers ending up in emergency rooms or dying after participating in the “Benadryl Challenge” encouraged in videos posted on TikTok. We are investigating these reports and conducting a review to determine if additional cases have been reported. We will update the public once we have completed our review or have more information to share.' The agency also contacted TikTok, urging the removal of such videos and vigilance against future posts. The FDA advises parents to store Benadryl out of sight and reach of children and to lock up medications that may be misused. Healthcare workers are advised to be aware of the trend and inform caregivers.
