Chicago Hospital Shooting: Officer Killed, Suspect Held

A police officer has been killed and another is in critical condition following a shooting at a Chicago hospital on Saturday, according to officials.

Details of the Incident

Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling confirmed that the suspect, who has not yet been publicly identified, is in custody. The shooting occurred at Endeavor Health Swedish Hospital around 10:50 a.m.

“Officers transported an individual over to the Swedish hospital for an observation, at which time two of our officers were shot,” Snelling said during a news conference. “One was shot critically. It (the death) was pronounced. The second officer right now is fighting for his life in the hospital behind us.”

Hospital Response

The hospital stated that its campus was placed on lockdown, but patients and staff were safe. In a Facebook post, the hospital explained that the individual, who was in law enforcement custody, was brought to the emergency department for treatment. He was “wanded upon arrival” following protocols and escorted by law enforcement at all times. The man later fired shots at the officers and exited the building before being apprehended.

Official Statements

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson described the event as a tragedy. “Today is a real difficult moment for our city. It’s a tragedy,” he said at the news conference. The city is providing mental health support services to police officers, he added.

Snelling noted that the investigation is ongoing and that details cannot be disclosed at this time. A weapon was recovered at the scene. The names of the officers have not been released pending family notification. One officer was a 38-year-old with 10 years of service, while the other was a 57-year-old with 21 years of service.
