BBC Presenter Details Harrowing Four-Year Stalking Experience
BBC Scotland presenter Anne McAlpine has revealed the terrifying details of a four-year stalking ordeal that left her feeling "vulnerable and exposed," including the chilling moment her stalker appeared at her home. The 39-year-old broadcaster, known for presenting Landward and narrating BBC Scotland's Home of the Year, shared her experience on Good Morning Britain with hosts Richard Madeley and Kate Garraway.
From Love Letters to Home Intrusion
The stalking nightmare began when Anne started receiving love letters at BBC Scotland's Glasgow headquarters. Initially, she didn't find them particularly threatening, describing them as "unpleasant and uncomfortable" but often ending up in the bin. However, the tone shifted dramatically after she announced her engagement to now-husband Ken in 2021.
"This person seemed to think we were in some sort of relationship," Anne explained. "They would comment on the clothes that I wore on TV, the way that I moved, the way that I held my pen. They thought I was giving subliminal messages through the television."
The situation escalated in September 2024 when Anne discovered 71-year-old Robert Green outside her home after returning from a late shift. "He approached the car and held eye contact, he was walking towards me quite slowly. Something just felt really off," she recalled. "He didn't look friendly, he didn't look like he was looking for directions or was going to speak."
Intensifying Harassment and Police Involvement
The stalking intensified in the following months, with Green attempting to gain access to her house. "He was buzzing the flat in the middle of the night, he would stand in the middle of the road and just look up at the window," Anne revealed. Her neighbors also encountered Green during these incidents.
When Anne contacted the police and mentioned the letters, the situation took on "a whole other meaning altogether." She noted that "it went from harassment to a stalking case quite quickly." The experience had a profound impact on her daily life, making her hyper-aware of her surroundings and uncomfortable with her career choice.
"It has made me aware of surroundings, being watched. No one should be made to feel unsafe in their own home," Anne stated. "That has happened and made me feel uncomfortable with my career choice, which I worked very hard at. It made me feel exposed and vulnerable."
Court Proceedings and Sentencing
Robert Green, of Hillhead in Glasgow, denied the allegations but was found guilty of engaging in a course of conduct that left Anne in fear and alarm between February 2021 and November 2024. On February 9, he was sentenced to two years' supervision and received a lifetime non-harassment order preventing him from contacting Anne.
Sheriff Owen Mullan told Green his behavior had been "sinister, unwelcomed and upsetting" and warned that the sentence was a direct alternative to prison. The sheriff noted that Green had shown "little remorse or insight to your behavior" but considered his age and lack of previous convictions in the sentencing decision.
"With some hesitation, I can deal with you today without sending you to prison," Sheriff Mullan said. "I have taken account of what has been said on your behalf, the background report and the time you have spent on remand. This is a direct alternative to custody." Green was also convicted of missing two court dates in June and October 2025.
Anne described one particularly frightening incident in November 2024 when her house buzzer was pressed twice in the early hours. "I went to the window and there was a man walking away from the steps," she told the court. "He looked towards the window which gave me a fright. I backed away. I looked again and he made off. It made me feel quite scared and uncomfortable - someone buzzing at 5am, you assume the worst."
The BBC presenter reported the behavior to police after speaking to a neighbor and seeing the same man with a carrier bag outside her home. These interactions left her feeling "terrified" and fundamentally changed how she lives her life and goes about her daily business.
