Tragic Jacuzzi Accident Claims Life of 12-Year-Old Boy at Italian Hotel
A devastating incident unfolded over the Easter weekend at a hotel in Italy, resulting in the death of a 12-year-old boy who became trapped in a jacuzzi filter. The tragedy occurred in the spa facilities of the Duca di Montefeltro Hotel, located in Pennabilli near Rimini, casting a shadow over what should have been a joyful family holiday.
Easter Sunday Turns to Tragedy
Matteo Brandimarti was enjoying a holiday with his family when they decided to relax at the hotel's spa on Easter Sunday. At approximately 10:30 in the morning, the young boy became ensnared in the hot tub, with his leg violently sucked into a nozzle while the hydromassage function was active. He remained trapped underwater for nearly five agonising minutes before hotel staff could intervene.
Emergency Response and Hospitalisation
Hotel employees managed to shut off the main power supply and the jacuzzi pump, freeing Matteo from the powerful suction. Emergency services rushed to the scene, finding the child in a serious condition and immediately commencing cardiopulmonary resuscitation. They successfully restored his heartbeat and summoned an emergency helicopter to airlift him to hospital for urgent medical care.
Brain Death and Organ Donation
Despite being placed on life support equipment, Matteo was declared brain dead on April 9. Investigators confirmed that the prolonged submersion caused cardiac arrest and severe brain damage due to hypoxia. According to local media reports, the life support systems will now be deactivated.
In a poignant act of generosity amidst their grief, the boy's parents, Maurizio and Nicoletta, have given consent for organ donation through their lawyer, Umberto Gramenzi. An autopsy may be performed to gain further insight into the precise cause of death, as indicated by local reports.
Official Investigation Launched
The Prosecutor's Office has initiated a formal investigation into involuntary manslaughter, though no suspects have been named at this stage. The hotel's pool and surrounding spa area have been sealed off for the past four days as the inquiry continues.
Safety Inspection and Potential Design Flaws
Spresal, the workplace safety and prevention service operated by the Local Health Authority, has submitted a detailed report on the condition of the hot tub system. Authorities are examining potential irregularities in the design of the nozzles and vents, with particular attention to the protective grilles covering these devices.
Community Mourning and Condolences
Following the heartbreaking incident, Matteo's father shared a photograph of his son on Facebook, prompting an outpouring of sympathy from dozens of commenters. One person wrote, 'Beautiful sweet soul ...may God hold you in his arms and always protect your parents,' while another added, 'So much pain is unjust.' The community's collective grief underscores the profound impact of this avoidable tragedy.
