An Afghan refugee accused of a brutal triple stabbing in west London, which resulted in one fatality and two serious injuries, has been medically assessed as mentally fit to stand trial for murder. The ruling came during a hearing at Southwark Crown Court this morning, where the defendant appeared via video link from Broadmoor Hospital in Berkshire.

Safi Dawood, aged 23, faces charges of murdering 49-year-old council worker Wayne Broadhurst, who was fatally stabbed while walking his dog in Uxbridge last October. The incident also left Dawood's landlord, Shahzad Farrukh, 45, and a 14-year-old boy with severe, life-changing injuries. Dawood is additionally charged with two counts of attempted murder and possession of an offensive weapon.
Court Proceedings and Psychiatric Evaluation
During the 30-minute hearing, defence counsel Richard Jory KC informed the court that a psychiatrist had concluded Dawood is fit to stand trial, with a second expert concurring on this assessment. However, experts remain divided on whether Dawood could potentially claim diminished responsibility for an alternative charge of manslaughter, with one psychiatrist describing him as 'psychotic but not insane' at the time of the attack.
Dawood, who communicated through a Pashto translator to confirm his name, was not required to enter pleas at this stage. The case has been adjourned until April 27, when he is expected to plead to all charges except murder. A provisional trial date has been set for later this summer, anticipated to last up to three weeks.
Background of the Defendant and Victims
Dawood arrived in the United Kingdom five years ago via a lorry and was granted asylum and leave to remain in 2022, according to Home Office records. The attack allegedly occurred shortly after he was informed he had days to vacate his annex at Mr Farrukh's residence.
Wayne Broadhurst, a dedicated employee of Greener Ealing—a company providing sustainable waste disposal and grounds maintenance services to Ealing Council—was stabbed approximately 14 times and pronounced dead at the scene. Metropolitan Police confirmed that Dawood and Mr Broadhurst were not acquainted prior to the incident.
Mr Farrukh, a business consultant, sustained severe injuries described as life-altering, though no update on his condition was provided during today's proceedings. The teenage victim, whose identity is protected, has since been discharged from hospital following treatment.
