Four police officers were injured and fourteen individuals arrested during a demonstration outside the Iranian embassy in London, the Metropolitan Police has confirmed.
Chaos at Kensington Diplomatic Mission
The incident unfolded on Friday, January 16, 2026, at the embassy located in Kensington. According to a police spokesperson, the arrests were made on suspicion of a range of offences, including violent disorder, trespass on diplomatic premises, assaulting an emergency worker, and criminal damage.
The four officers involved in managing the protest sustained what were described as minor injuries. Social media footage from the day appeared to capture scenes of protesters being detained and others nursing injuries, though the exact circumstances surrounding all injuries were not fully detailed in the initial police statement.
Flag Removal Triggers Escalation
The protest took a dramatic turn when one individual allegedly climbed the embassy building. The Metropolitan Police stated the protester "illegally accessed private property and climbed across multiple balconies onto the terrace of the embassy and removed its flag."
This act prompted a significant police response. Authorities reported that a group of protesters then attempted to prevent the man's lawful arrest. In response, officers were forced to employ dispersal tactics to ensure safety and prevent further disorder.
The flag-removal suspect was subsequently arrested on suspicion of criminal damage, trespass on diplomatic property, and assaulting police. He remains in custody.
Police Response and Ongoing Investigation
In total, 13 further arrests were made in connection with the protest for the various offences cited. The Metropolitan Police had anticipated potential trouble, stating that additional officers had been deployed to the area. A Section 35 dispersal order was also authorised to help clear crowds and restore order.
The force's use of such an order grants them the power to direct individuals to leave a specific locality for up to 48 hours to reduce the likelihood of crime or disorder. The investigation into the events of January 16th is ongoing.
