Police in Utah arrested a man on Monday for stabbing a Muslim kiosk worker multiple times at the Valley Fair Mall in West Valley City. The suspect, identified as Peter Michael Larsen, 48, told investigators that he targeted the victim because of his religion, according to a court affidavit.
Authorities stated that Larsen constitutes 'a substantial danger to the public if released based on his violent actions ... ideologies and pre-planned mass casualty events.' The victim sustained 'multiple stab wounds all over his body and was bleeding profusely,' police said. He was hospitalized in critical condition, and a GoFundMe page set up by a friend reported that he was stabbed 15 times and required surgeries.
Attack Details and Bystander Intervention
According to Imam Shuaib Din of the Utah Islamic Center, who spoke with the victim's family, the suspect approached the Muslim man, asked for his name, inquired about his religion, and requested a bottle of water. As the victim turned to get the water, Larsen began stabbing him. Bystanders subdued the suspect before police arrived, and he was also hospitalized for injuries sustained during the struggle before being booked into the Salt Lake County jail.
Larsen faces charges of attempted murder and prohibited dangerous weapon conduct, as per jail records. The Salt Lake Tribune reported the suspect's statement that he 'had targeted the victim with intent to kill him because of his religion [Muslim].'
Condemnation and Broader Context
Muslim rights groups, including the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), condemned the incident. US rights advocates have noted a rise in Islamophobia over the past two decades, citing factors such as anti-immigration policies, white supremacy, and the fallout of Israel’s war in Gaza. Recent deadly attacks include the 2023 stabbing of a six-year-old Muslim child in Illinois, whose killer was sentenced to 53 years in prison, and a 2026 shooting at a San Diego mosque that left five dead.
