Passengers at Edinburgh Airport are facing significant disruption after the terminal building was evacuated due to a security alert on Friday evening.
Security Alert Triggers Evacuation
Police Scotland confirmed that an explosive ordnance disposal team is at the scene, and a cordon has been established with road closures in place. The alert was prompted by a report of a potentially suspicious package received around 6:50 PM.
In a statement on the Police Scotland Edinburgh Facebook page, authorities said: “Edinburgh Airport has been evacuated as a precaution following a report of a potentially suspicious package, reported around 6.50pm on Friday. Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) are in attendance and a cordon is in place around the airport with road closures in place.”
Ongoing Investigation
Inquiries are ongoing, and members of the public are advised to check ahead and contact their airline for the latest flight information. An Edinburgh Airport Facebook post stated: “Due to reports of a potentially suspicious item, the airport has been evacuated while specialist teams investigate. Updates will be issued when available. Passengers should check with their airline for the latest information on their flight.”

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) also responded to the incident. A spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 8.44pm on Friday to assist partners with an ongoing incident at Edinburgh Airport. Operations control mobilised three appliances and three specialist resources.” As of 10:50 PM on Friday, SFRS crews remained in attendance.
