Former Major League Baseball star Lenny Dykstra is facing potential drug charges following his arrest during a traffic stop in Pennsylvania on New Year's Day.
Details of the Traffic Stop and Alleged Discovery
Pennsylvania State Police reportedly discovered a container holding what they suspected to be crack-cocaine or methamphetamine during the stop on 1st January. Officers also allegedly found a glass smoking device containing suspected drug residue.
According to initial reports from TMZ, the substances were not field-tested at the scene. Despite the lack of an immediate test, Dykstra has been formally charged with misdemeanour possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia. Police indicated that the 62-year-old former athlete was believed to have been a passenger in the vehicle.
Legal Defence and Previous Acquittal
Dykstra's attorney, Matthew Blit, has strongly denied the allegations on his client's behalf. In a statement, Blit asserted that the alleged narcotics did not belong to Dykstra, who is reportedly recovering from a serious stroke.
"Lenny was not knowingly in possession of or under the influence of any narcotics on his person and was not taken into custody at the scene," Blit stated. He clarified that the driver was the individual arrested at the scene, facing 17 counts including being under the influence.
Attorney Tom Mincer, also part of Dykstra's legal team, emphasised their commitment to absolving the former player of all possession charges. This incident follows a previous case where Dykstra beat drug charges in New Jersey.
Dykstra's Baseball Legacy and Current Situation
Lenny Dykstra enjoyed a notable 12-year career in Major League Baseball. He was a key member of the 1986 World Series-winning New York Mets and later helped the Philadelphia Phillies win the National League pennant in 1993.
His post-playing career has been marred by legal and financial difficulties. The outcome of these latest drug possession charges in Pennsylvania remains pending as the legal process unfolds.
