Drug dealer jailed after Newport machete chase

A convicted drug dealer, who was out on license, has been sent back to prison for more than eight years following a dramatic police chase in South Wales where he was seen carrying a machete.

Bodycam Footage Captures Dramatic Flight

The incident, which unfolded in Newport in September 2025, was captured on police body-worn video. Luke Montgomery, aged 23, was spotted by officers and immediately attempted to flee the scene. During the pursuit, he was seen discarding the large knife by throwing it underneath a parked vehicle before he was finally apprehended.

Guilty Plea to Multiple Drug Charges

Following his arrest, Montgomery faced serious charges related to his drug dealing activities. He subsequently admitted to three separate counts of possession with intent to supply. The charges related to Class A drugs, namely heroin, cocaine, and crack cocaine.

Substantial Prison Sentence Imposed

At a recent sentencing hearing, the court handed down a significant custodial term. Montgomery has been jailed for eight years and four months for his crimes. This sentence reflects the seriousness of both the drug offences and the concerning incident involving the weapon while he was already on license from a previous conviction.

The case highlights ongoing police efforts to tackle drug-related crime and the dangers officers can face, with the bodycam footage providing crucial evidence.
