Bessbrook House Fire Reveals Major Cannabis Factory in Co Down
Cannabis factory found after Bessbrook house fire

Firefighters responding to a blaze at a County Down property made a significant discovery, uncovering what police have described as a cannabis factory.

Fire Leads to Unexpected Discovery

The incident unfolded on Sunday, 18th January, in the Thomas Street area of Bessbrook. The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS) was first to attend the scene after receiving a report of a house fire at approximately 4.25pm.

While tackling the flames, crews alerted police to the presence of a substantial quantity of cannabis plants and related growing equipment inside the property.

Police Investigation Underway

Inspector Walker provided details, stating: "Thankfully, there was no one in the house at the time, and no injuries were reported." He moved to reassure local residents, adding, "I would like to reassure the local community once again that there was no ongoing risk to the public from the fire and that the scene was subsequently made safe."

At this initial stage, the fire itself is not being treated as suspicious, but police confirmed that enquiries into the discovery of the drugs operation are ongoing.

Appeal for Information on Drug Supply

The Police Service of Northern Ireland has emphasised that disrupting the supply of illegal drugs remains a key priority. Officers have issued a public appeal for information related to the find.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on the non-emergency number 101, quoting reference number 870 of 18/01/25. Alternatively, reports can be submitted online via the police non-emergency reporting form.

Information can also be passed anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or through their website.
