A woman has faced backlash after reporting her neighbor's family to the police for breaking into her garden and using her private pool while she was on holiday. The incident has sparked a debate online about whether her actions constituted justified protection of property or excessive revenge.
Homeowner's Account of the Incident
The woman, who owns a private pool in her back garden, had taken measures to deter trespassers by displaying warning signs, installing fencing, and using a pool cover. Despite these precautions, she received a notification from her security system while away, showing three early teens and one adult attempting to climb the fence to access her pool.
She immediately called the police, who detained the group before they could reach the water. Upon returning home, her neighbor confronted her, screaming that her sister and kids would now have a criminal record because of the homeowner's actions.
Legal Proceedings and Outcome
The neighbor's sister pleaded in court that it was a hot summer day and they wanted to cool down, claiming the neighbor insisted they use the pool despite the private property sign. However, the homeowner explained to the judges that she did not give consent. The judges found the neighbor and her sister guilty of second-degree trespassing, which carries a punishment of $200 (£150) fine and twenty days in jail. The teens were also found guilty, and the homeowner's solicitor applied for a restraining order.
The teens' lawyer argued they were unaware of the sign, but the judge dismissed this, stating they willingly listened to their mother and aunt. According to the woman, the judge ruled that the teens were complicit in the trespassing.
Public Reaction and Debate
The Reddit post detailing the incident drew mixed reactions. One user commented, "Imagine trespassing then suing the person you trespassed on. Olympic level delusion." Another said, "Love the neighbor blaming you for her family's records, when it was in fact she that prompted all this." A third added, "I'd inform the whole neighborhood about this."
While some supported the homeowner's decision to involve the police, others argued that reporting the teens was an overreaction, given the heat of the day and the relatively minor nature of the offense. The case highlights the legal consequences of trespassing and the importance of respecting private property.
