Euro Car Parks Probed by CMA Over Petrol Queue Fines

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is investigating Euro Car Parks over allegations that it issued parking fines to motorists while they were queuing for petrol at fuel stations. The probe, which will run until spring 2027, focuses on whether drivers should receive parking charges while waiting for petrol, diesel, or other forecourt services.

Motorists have reported being penalised for simply queuing to fill up, charging electric vehicles, or even inflating tyres. Some claim there were no visible signs warning of charges when they entered the forecourt.

CMA Demands Fair Treatment

Emma Cochrane, the CMA's executive director of consumer protection, stated: "Costs are high and often unexpected which is difficult when people are budgeting carefully. Parking companies must treat motorists fairly at all stages – and a clear and consistent appeals process must be at the heart of this." She added: "It's time for all private parking operators to comply with consumer law or risk action from the CMA."

The CMA has published an open letter to private parking companies outlining expectations. These include offering drivers a sufficient "consideration period" before issuing fines, providing clear information about payment and appeals, and improving appeals processes to avoid "unsatisfactory and inconsistent outcomes for consumers."

Rising Number of Parking Tickets

Data from the RAC reveals that private parking companies issued over 14 million parking tickets between 2024 and 2025. This represents a 13% increase from the previous year and nearly double the number issued six years ago.

Jack Cousens, head of roads policy at The AA, commented: "Drivers are already feeling the pinch with rising pump prices, so the last thing they'd want or expect is to be hit for a parking charge just for sitting in the queue."

The Express has contacted Euro Car Parks for comment.
