CCTV footage released by the Crown Prosecution Service has revealed the chilling moment three convicted murderers followed child killer Kyle Bevan into his prison cell at HMP Wakefield before stabbing him 25 times. The attackers then tucked him into bed to make it appear as though he was sleeping.
The Attack
Kyle Bevan, 33, was serving a life sentence for the brutal murder of his two-year-old stepdaughter Lola James in Wales. He was housed at HMP Wakefield, a Category A prison known as "Monster Mansion," when he was targeted by fellow inmates Mark Fellows, Lee Newell, and David Taylor.
Footage shows the three men stalking Bevan and following him into his cell. Fellows, 45, known as "The Iceman," is seen wearing blue plastic gloves before the attack. The men stabbed Bevan 25 times to the neck and torso, cornering him and restraining his arms.
Bevan was not found until a roll call the next morning, by which time he had been dead for several hours. Fellows had checked on him after the killing to ensure the murder went undetected.
The Perpetrators
Mark Fellows, 45, had previously shot dead 'gangland kingpins' Paul Massey and John Kinsella. Lee Newell, 57, was already serving a life sentence for the strangulation of his neighbour Mary Neal in Norwich in 1988. David Taylor, 64, admitted the murder of Alisha Apostoloff-Boyarin, whose body has never been recovered, and also attempted to murder a police officer.
Prosecutors said the men had targeted certain inmates, including sex offenders and those convicted of crimes against children. Searches of their cells revealed items with Bevan's blood on them, including a piece of metal fashioned into a point and other "makeshift weapons."
Sentencing and Impact
All three were convicted of murder and handed whole life orders at Leeds Crown Court on Friday. In her sentencing remarks, Mrs Justice McGowan said: "He was left to bleed to death - his last moments must have been terrifying."
West Yorkshire Police's senior investigating officer, Chief Inspector James Entwistle, said: "This was a premeditated brutal attack carried out inside a prison by three long-term inmates. Fellows, Taylor and Newell’s actions showed a complete disregard for life and for the rules designed to keep people safe in custody."
The verdicts ensure the continued safety of others by holding these dangerous individuals accountable.
