Good Morning Britain issued a significant update on the grooming gangs inquiry on Tuesday. Bulletin reporter Rosie Dowsing informed the audience and ITV hosts Ed Balls and Susanna Reid that the National Crime Agency has directed police to reopen grooming gang criminal investigations dating back to 2010, delivering a substantial blow to Labour.
Operation Beaconport Launched
The journalist explained that specialist detectives have already identified hundreds of cold cases in an effort to finally convict rapists and, in their words, “deliver justice for victims and survivors.” They stated that Operation Beaconport is the largest investigation of its kind in the country’s history.
Ed introduced the news segment by saying: “Thousands of victims but also very many perpetrators who will be worrying now. Are we going to see convictions in the coming months?” Rosie responded affirmatively. “This is about justice for survivors who may not have been believed the first time round,” she added.
Scope of the Review
Operation Beaconport will review cases where police forces across England and Wales and the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) decided to take no further action against suspects between January 1, 2010, and March 31, 2025. This review will run alongside the national public inquiry announced by the Government.
The review is limited to cases involving living suspects that have not already undergone reassessment. The first eight closed grooming gang cases have now been sent back to police forces for fresh investigations.
