Urgent Road Closures Reinstated After Partial Building Collapse in Liverpool
Urgent Road Closures After Liverpool Building Collapse

Urgent road closures have been reinstated around a building that partially collapsed on the northern edge of Liverpool city centre. The closures were put in place after temporary safety fencing was removed without authorisation.

Building Collapse Details

In February, bricks fell from the six-storey building onto a parked white Audi. The outer brickwork from the sixth and ground floors came away, damaging three vehicles. External cracks were also visible.

Council Action

Liverpool Council confirmed on social media that it implemented an urgent road closure on Porter Street on Tuesday evening. The statement said: “Liverpool Council has implemented an urgent road closure on Porter Street following safety concerns relating to a building in the area which previously experienced a partial collapse.”

“A closure has already been in place on Porter Street, alongside a partial closure on Regent Street. However, temporary safety fencing at the site has been removed without authorisation, meaning additional measures are now required to ensure public safety.”

Demolition Plans

The building is not listed, and plans are being progressed for its demolition, which will also include the removal of a bridge link connecting it to a building on the opposite side of Porter Street. It is privately owned and not under the council's control.

The council added: “At this stage, the road closure is expected to remain in place for a significant period while the necessary works and approvals are progressed. There will be no impact on events at the Hill Dickinson Stadium as a result of this closure.”

Previous Incident

Earlier this year, a cordon was set up by firefighters and a nearby business was forced to evacuate and close. No one was injured. Merseyside Police attended and contacted the property owner. The crushed Audi remained in situ during safety works. Residents and business owners in the Ten Streets area launched a campaign for a renewed regeneration strategy focusing on “everyday safety, inclusion and dialogue.”
