M6 Crash: Overturned Car Sparks Major Delays Near Birmingham

A serious collision involving an overturned car has caused severe disruption on the M6 motorway near Birmingham this morning, sparking long delays and extensive queues.

Crash Details and Lane Closures

The incident occurred on the northbound carriageway of the M6 between Junction 4a for the M42 and Junction 5 for Castle Bromwich, Castle Vale, and Sutton Coldfield. According to National Highways, the collision resulted in a car overturning and coming to rest on its side against the central reservation.

In response, emergency services have closed lanes 3 and 4 of the four-lane carriageway. All emergency services, including Traffic Officers, are currently at the scene. Recovery vehicles have been arranged and are en route to clear the overturned vehicle.

Major Travel Disruption for Motorists

The lane closures have led to significant congestion on one of the country's busiest motorway routes. National Traffic Information Control (NTIC) systems are reporting delays of up to 55 minutes on the approach to the incident. Congestion is building, with queues stretching back for approximately four miles.

Motorists travelling northbound on the M6 or planning to use the affected section are being advised to allow considerable extra time for their journeys this morning or to seek alternative routes if possible.

Ongoing Response and Recovery

National Highways West Midlands confirmed the ongoing operation in a statement. "Due to an overturned vehicle, lanes 3 and 4 are closed on the M6 north near Birmingham between J4A and J5," they said. The authority reiterated that all relevant teams are working at the scene to manage the situation and recover the vehicle as swiftly as possible to restore normal traffic flow.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential for sudden and severe disruption on major transport corridors. Drivers are urged to exercise caution when passing the incident site and to follow instructions from traffic officers and electronic signage.
