For many UK travellers, economy air travel is synonymous with budget-friendly basics, where any complimentary extra feels like a minor victory. However, a seasoned flight service manager has revealed that numerous freebies and hidden perks are available on many flights, often going unnoticed by passengers.
The 'Secret Wonder Walls' and Galley Stashes
Ashleigh Berry, a flight service manager and star of Netflix's Love Is Blind, spoke to the Daily Mail about the in-flight luxuries passengers routinely miss. She highlighted the existence of complimentary snack baskets, typically located in the aircraft galleys or in areas she calls 'secret wonder walls'.
In premium cabins, a deluxe snack box hidden in these 'wonder walls' can contain an array of items, from Virgin’s premium crisps and gummy sweets to practical comforts like eye masks and extra pairs of socks. Ashleigh noted that even passengers who have purchased tickets inclusive of these perks are sometimes unaware of their availability.
Economy Class Hidden Treasures
The good news is not reserved for premium flyers. Ashleigh Berry confirmed that economy passengers also have access to little-known freebies. Another secret snack basket, usually found in the galley, is stocked with treats ranging from Oreo biscuits and chocolate to mini packets of crisps.
One travel writer recounted to The Express how she discovered this treasure trove while walking to the bathroom in economy. After inquiring with a flight attendant, she was told she could 'help herself' to Cadbury's chocolate, mini pretzels, biscuits, and even free refills of orange and apple juice.
Ashleigh's advice to passengers is straightforward: "If it’s not on display, come into the galley and ask the cabin crew for anything else that’s not been offered."
Beyond Snacks: Essential Hygiene Products
The hidden offerings extend beyond food and drink. Ashleigh emphasised a crucial service many customers overlook. "In the toilets we have sanitary pads and hygiene products available for you," she said. "They are just under the sink, and you can absolutely help yourself to them."
She explained that these items are accessed by pressing a button under the sink and are there for all passengers. "I often get asked for those products and they are all available to our wonderful customers," she added.
Meanwhile, another flight attendant, Cierra Mistt, has shared insider tips on securing free upgrades. In an online video, she claimed there are "so many ways to get free upgrades" and promised to reveal an 'easy' trick she has "seen work thousands of times."
These revelations highlight that a more comfortable and cost-effective flying experience may be within reach for UK travellers, simply by knowing where to look and having the confidence to ask the cabin crew.
