Fire Breaks Out at Marine Science Laboratory
The fire erupted on Saturday evening, prompting immediate evacuations and sending thick plumes of smoke billowing from the marine science lab building. According to USF President Moez Limayem, no injuries were sustained and no hazardous materials were released during the incident.
Extensive Damage and Ongoing Investigation
President Limayem communicated with students and staff via a message, stating that damage assessments are underway but the destruction appears severe. He noted, “Our recovery teams are working with the College of Marine Science to prioritize key research material and equipment for salvage assessment when the building is cleared.” The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Impact on Academic Activities
Classes and exams originally scheduled for the lab building will be relocated to alternative venues. The university is coordinating with faculty to ensure minimal disruption to academic schedules.
The fire at the USF St. Petersburg campus highlights the vulnerability of research facilities and the importance of robust safety protocols. Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses and recovery efforts continue.
