Washington State's governor has taken emergency measures to prevent a jet fuel crisis at one of America's busiest airports after a major pipeline leak threatened supplies.
Emergency Declaration to Keep Planes Flying
Governor Bob Ferguson declared a state of emergency on Wednesday to ensure adequate jet fuel deliveries reach Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. The emergency proclamation temporarily suspends state regulations that limit driving hours for commercial vehicle operators transporting jet fuel.
The governor's office confirmed that while these restrictions are lifted, all necessary safe-driving measures remain firmly in place. This decisive action comes as the region faces potential fuel shortages affecting air travel.
Pipeline Shutdown Sparks Supply Concerns
The crisis began when the Olympic Pipeline was shut down on November 11 after routine maintenance revealed a leak between the cities of Everett and Snohomish. Pipeline operators immediately notified state authorities and are working with both state and federal agencies to contain the spill, conduct cleanup operations, and repair the damaged section.
Officials have provided no estimated timeline for when the 400-mile (644-kilometer) pipeline will resume normal operations. The pipeline, operated by BP Pipelines North America, Inc., serves as the primary delivery system for petroleum products in the Pacific Northwest.
Immediate Impact on Air Travel
In response to the pipeline shutdown, Seattle-Tacoma airport officials have been instructing incoming flights to fuel up to capacity before arrival since last week. This precautionary measure aims to conserve the airport's existing fuel reserves while alternative delivery methods are established.
The Olympic Pipeline normally carries gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, and other petroleum products from refineries in northwest Washington to distribution terminals throughout Washington and Oregon. Its closure represents a significant challenge for fuel distribution across the region west of the Cascade mountains.
The emergency declaration represents a critical intervention to maintain normal flight operations at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, ensuring travellers face minimal disruption despite the ongoing pipeline issues.
