A major motorway in Hertfordshire is partially reopening this morning following a serious collision that forced a full overnight closure. One lane of the A1(M) southbound has now reopened to traffic, while the other remains closed for essential barrier repairs.
Details of the Overnight Incident
The serious crash occurred on the A1(M) southbound between Junction 3 for St Albans and Hatfield and Junction 1 for the M25. Due to the severity of the incident, both lanes were closed throughout the early hours of Saturday, December 27, causing significant disruption. Hertfordshire Police led the emergency response at the scene.
Authorities have indicated that a full investigation into the collision will not be necessary. Once vehicle recovery was completed, traffic management teams were able to reopen lane two of the two-lane carriageway.
Ongoing Disruption and Diversion Route
Drivers are warned that lane one remains closed for barrier repairs following damage sustained in the crash. National Highways implemented a signed diversion for southbound road users while the closure was in full effect.
Motorists were advised to follow the hollow circle diversion symbol. The official diversion route instructed drivers to:
- Exit at Junction 3 (Roehyde Roundabout) and take the second exit onto the A414 North Orbital Road towards St Albans.
- At the next roundabout, take the fourth exit onto the A1081 towards London Colney.
- At the following roundabout, take the second exit to join the M25 at junction 22, heading to junction 23 (South Mimms) for the A1(M).
Current Travel Advice
While one lane is now operational, residual delays are expected in the area, particularly around the closure point for barrier works. Commuters and travellers are urged to allow extra time for their journeys or consider alternative routes where possible.
National Highways continues to manage the situation, with repairs underway to make the motorway fully safe and operational. Drivers should continue to check live traffic updates for the latest information on the reopening of the second lane.
