Vilnius Tops Christmas Market Value Chart at Just £509 for Two
Vilnius: Europe's Best Value Christmas Market Break

As November unfolds, the festive season begins in earnest with the grand opening of traditional Christmas markets across Europe. For UK holidaymakers seeking a magical yet affordable winter getaway, new research has pinpointed the continent's ultimate value destination.

The Baltic Bargain

According to the latest Post Office Travel Money Christmas Market Barometer, the Lithuanian capital of Vilnius has been crowned Europe's best-value city break. The comprehensive analysis of 15 European destinations found that a two-night trip for two people to Vilnius averages just £509.

This all-inclusive cost covers return flights, two nights in three or four-star accommodation with breakfast, airport transfers, two evening meals with wine, coffee, festive drinks and Christmas market snacks. The city's total represents exceptional value, being more than eight per cent cheaper than its nearest competitor.

Competitive Christmas Pricing

Taking the second spot in the value rankings is Riga, Latvia, with an average cost of £555 for a similar package. Interestingly, while Vilnius claims the overall value crown, prices for meals, drinks and airport transfers are actually slightly lower in Riga at £178 compared to Vilnius's £182.

Both Baltic capitals now offer better value than last year's best buy, Bratislava, where prices have increased by over 11 per cent. The research reveals that prices have fallen in approximately half of the destinations studied, despite sterling's decline against European currencies over the past year.

From Budget to Luxury

At the opposite end of the spectrum, Copenhagen, Denmark emerged as the most expensive Christmas market destination. The study found the basket of goods there to be more than twice as expensive as in Vilnius.

The price difference is particularly striking when comparing meal costs: two three-course meals for two with a bottle of wine typically costs £305 in Copenhagen compared to just £138 in Vilnius.

Germany's Berlin has shown significant improvement in affordability, rising from 11th place last year to claim the eighth spot this year. Costs for flights and accommodation have decreased by 22 per cent, making it the best value western European city surveyed.

Expert Travel Advice

Laura Plunkett, head of travel money at Post Office, commented: 'A short break to one of Europe's colourful Christmas markets is an attractive holiday option at this time of year. However, sterling's drop in value is an important factor for travellers to consider before booking a trip because this varies between currencies.'

She added the crucial advice for cost-conscious travellers: 'Budget-conscious travellers stand to save hundreds of pounds if they choose carefully.'

The message for UK holidaymakers is clear: looking beyond traditional Western European destinations towards the Baltic states could yield significant savings while delivering an equally enchanting Christmas market experience.
