New research has pinpointed the travel-related questions Brits typed into Google most frequently this year. To help, Chris Pitt, Concierge Manager at Royal Westmoreland in Barbados, has provided expert answers to these common concerns.
Airport Security and Health Concerns
Topping the list, with a staggering 8,100 monthly searches, is the question of how much liquid can be carried in hand luggage. Chris Pitt clarifies the current rules: "Liquids in hand luggage must be in containers of no more than 100ml, all placed together inside a single, clear, reusable plastic bag." He notes this includes everything from perfume to contact lens solution. For checked baggage, however, he confirms there is 'no liquid limit'.
Another major health-related query, attracting 4,400 searches per month, is whether it's safe to fly while pregnant. "While it's generally safe," Chris advises, "it's always best to consult a medical professional first." He warns that policies differ between airlines, with many imposing a cut-off point typically between 32 and 36 weeks, often requiring a doctor's note for later-stage travel.
Passport Pitfalls and Insurance Insights
Stories of ruined holidays due to passport issues remain common, prompting 3,600 monthly searches on required passport validity. Chris explains it's not a simple answer: "Passport validity requirements vary between countries. In most cases, you'll need at least three to six months left on your UK passport, but you must check the specific rules for your destination."
Travel insurance is another hot topic, with 2,900 monthly searches focused on cost. Chris states the price depends on factors like trip duration, destination, age, and medical history. For coverage, he recommends a policy covering at least medical expenses, repatriation, lost documents, baggage issues, and travel delays.
Booking Strategies and Packing Hacks
Brits search for the best time to book flights 2,400 times a month. Chris suggests there's no perfect formula but recommends using comparison sites, being flexible with dates, and noting that weekend and school holiday flights are often pricier.
With 1,900 monthly searches, efficient packing is a key concern. Chris shares his mastered method: "Start with a list to avoid overpacking. Place heavier items like shoes around the edge first. For clothes, the roll method maximises space and minimises creases. Alternatively, packing cubes are a great organisational tool."
